Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network began their trial on this week, facing charges for attacks targeting far-right activists that earned them the moniker “Hammer Gang”.
Recently, the United States classified the organization as a terrorist organization along with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.
German prosecutors state the group was behind attacks on sites in Germany and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.
Certain individuals are allegedly accused of employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some severely injured.
Court proceedings involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for violent incidents in Budapest during early 2023, around an yearly gathering known as the “day of honor” that draws far-right participants from across Europe.
In a related case, another German activist, Maja T, is facing trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted assault against far-right activists in the lead-up to the identical event in 2023.
Eastern Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that oppose them.
Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, tasked with planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.
Together with Paul M., he is accused of organizing instruction courses where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. At depots managed by the suspect, the group allegedly accumulated hammers, irritant sprays, concealment items and mobile phones.
A different activist previously active with the organization, Lina E, became a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.
The US designation renders organization affiliates barred from entering the United States, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.
Germany's far-right AfD party applauded the US decision and called on the German administration to take similar action. However, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “taken note” of the US designation.
“The danger from the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have received convictions or remain detained.”
