Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for hours when multiple of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations impacting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and near the border with Belarus.
No fewer than 11 balloons containing numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that these practices become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
The recent incidents occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the region.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
