Cancellieri Displays Brief Sparks of Genius in Positive Aspect for Unstable Lazio

The mood at their home stadium was decidedly gloomy on Saturday afternoon. The home side was losing against Torino, an opponent that had let in a total of 10 goals while netting just two in their most recent five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their ongoing dissent in a long-running conflict with chairman Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Unraveling?

Had their campaign falling apart, or had there never been any cohesion holding it together from the beginning? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri to lead the team in the summer transfer window, only for him publicly stated that the board had failed to disclose a registration embargo they were about to receive for fiscal problems. Rumours that he might quit were unfounded, but he did say that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Roman club became as messy on the pitch as off the field, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing their other first five games, featuring the derby della Capitale. Throughout this period, it's been difficult to tell if progress is being made or collapsing.

The Youngster's Unforeseen Presence

A single player remained positive through it. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to feature for Lazio this year. He was on last season at Parma as a loanee and, during the summer break, Lazio were advocating for him to stay there temporarily. The signing restriction led to a change of plans. They were unable to weaken their team lacking backup options.

Cancellieri arrived in the first place when Sarri was last in charge, then a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 league appearances with the club in 2022-23, almost all of those from the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who left at the end of that season, would later accuse Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential only to bench him consistently."

Finding His Natural Fit

It's possible the coach was continuing to attempt to work out the exact type of his skill set. Labeled as a wide forward on arrival, Cancellieri yet was deployed for most of that campaign as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile as center forward. In 63 appearances on loan at Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
