Minister Confirms Ministry of Defence Looking at Potential Threat from Chinese Cars, as Staff Told to Avoid Confidential Discussions in Vehicles.

An defense official has stated that the MoD is actively examining the possible threats posed by Chinese vehicles, and personnel have been advised to refrain from discussing classified information in all vehicles.

Safety Guidance for MoD Staff

In a recent interview on LBC, Luke Pollard addressed reports that Ministry of Defence officials have been told not to discuss classified information while riding in China-made cars.

The minister stated that the MoD is “examining” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, but stressed that safety is a concern in all modern cars.

Our department has a collection of tens of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and those vehicles represent a tiny fraction.
But whether you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our staff is not to plug Ministry of Defence technology into their car, to avoid having conversations at a classified classification in any kind of car, due to the growing threats of surveillance that exist in all automobile, to only have those confidential conversations in protected areas. This is a prudent and sensible thing for everyone worried about safety.

When it was suggested that it would be prudent for the MoD to cease using all Chinese vehicles, Pollard responded: ‘That’s exactly what we’re investigating at the moment.”

Broader Defence Background

This announcement comes as reports from Norway and Denmark have warned the United Kingdom to the presence of dual-use kill switches in Chinese-made electric buses, which could allow the Chinese government to switch off buses and bring disruption to transport systems.

Furthermore, a Russia spy ship was reportedly directing laser beams at RAF aircrew, described as a “extremely risky” act by government representatives.

The broader defence environment highlights the significance of strong protocols and vigilance in every aspects of official operations, from transport use to communication practices.
