This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

We present a dare for partners in committed relationships who appreciate horror films: Settle in with your significant other and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit has now made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. On the surface, it could look like standard biological terror, but within Together exists a deep contemplation about how we choose to love our partners.

A Debut Feature Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for over ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the actors bring a unique chemistry to their roles, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The plot commences when the couple transition from the metropolis to the countryside for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, sure, but that’s primarily where the tropes cease. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their country house, a storm hits, and the two fall into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence takes hold of the couple. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a slow burn of scares, blending bits of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes during something horrific). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and presents them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they masterfully render countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and removed from his social circle. He dreads the notion of completely losing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in Together avoids making Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie confront the kind of problems that arise in any relationship a decade in. Deep down, they continue to care for each other. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to another person, the metaphor avoids being overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights work together in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that single viewers have interpreted the film as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the finale inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your significant other and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can embark on right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu as of this moment.
