People who endured abuse by church officials have voiced renewed hope after their first encounter with the new Pope at the Holy See.

The board president, who leads the anti-abuse organization, stated that the pontiff's choice to engage with them so early in his papacy spoke volumes about his dedication to tackling the issue.

Worldwide Zero-Tolerance Policy Pushed

The group is advocating for a global zero-tolerance policy that would permanently remove any priest who admits to or is proven of sexually abusing a minor. This approach has already been adopted in the US.

The Pope recognized that there is "resistance in some parts of the world" to this initiative, according to the representative.

"Everyone was practical when we recognized that there is pushback," they stated.

Inherited Issue

The current pontiff, who took the role in spring, has inherited this longstanding issue that has plagued the Church for decades.

Previous efforts to resolve the problem included an unprecedented meeting on child abuse within the institution and changes to canon law to clearly outlaw sexual abuse.

Deeply Felt Link

For Hickey, who uses gender-neutral pronouns, the drive for global implementation of the policy is deeply meaningful. The North American activist revealed they were victimized by a clergy member who was later transferred between different parishes.

"Hopefully this will set the tone for his papacy, because we want to collaborate with him," Hickey expressed. "We have the common objective, we seek to eliminate abuse by religious officials."

Significant Encounter

Multiple members of the coalition, which represents survivors and supporters from over thirty countries, met with the Pope in his Vatican office.

The discussion, initially planned for 20 minutes, lasted to a full hour, during which the religious leader "primarily heard to us," according to Hickey.

The Pope was characterized as "quite empathetic" when hearing the story of a female survivor victimized at a Catholic residential school for native youth in North America.

They added the leader was "compassionate" about their personal story and seemed "very humble, humorous, and approachable."

"Victims have consistently sought a voice in discussions and I didn't perceive like he was making empty promises," Hickey stated. "I believed like he was genuine, practical, and very open and eager to work with us."

Church Regulations Changes

The group is advocating that revisions to church regulations will facilitate the implementation of the strict approach worldwide.

They have consulted experts and gathered materials that they will present to Pope Leo.

"He appeared engaged in reviewing it," they noted.

Accountability Highlighted

A recent church-ordered report emphasized the "importance of a efficient process for the stepping down and/or dismissal of religious officials or personnel in cases of abuse or negligence."

The report also noted that survivors consistently emphasized the "urgent need for bishops and major superiors to be made responsible for negligence and cover-up."

Moving Forward

Hickey shared they told the pontiff at the start of their meeting: "This represents as much a risk for him to engage in a conversation as it was for us."

After the encounter, Hickey voiced hope for future change.

"We understand it's not something that's going to be resolved quickly, but at the conclusion, uniting and establishing a relationship and continuing to strengthen that bond is a move in the right direction," they stated.

They concluded that they shared with the pontiff: "Just because it's a difficult period, I believe like we can change how the narrative ends - he valued that."
